Rolls-Royce Group, a British power, ship and aviation equipment manufacturer, has announced that the Qatar Welfare Fund QIA has invested in the design firm Rolls-Royce SMR, owning 10% of its shares. This investment was the latest in securing full funding for the design of a green energy source. Founded in November 2021, Rolls-Royce SMR’s core business is the design of small modular nuclear reactors. The total amount invested in the new project was 490 million pounds. With the required financial resources, the firm will begin working on a standard design for a 470 MWe reactor, which is planned to be constructed in just five hundred days. The project will also provide for the serial production of components and their transportation in the usual way to the required point. As a result of the implementation of this project, the cost of building a nuclear power plant will be reduced to $2.4 billion at the first stage, and in the future, it will continue to decline. The first reactor is expected to be commissioned in the early 30s.
